I was reading NissanNurse's blog about his Sunday temptations and thought about what I have to face soon. I can really empathize with him.
My company has a conference center for training and meetings. Whenever we have training, it's binge-city. First there's the full breakfast -- the works: bacon, sausage, eggs, pancakes (or french toast) hashbrowns, fruit (how'd that get in there?!) pastries, biscuits, etc.
Now let's all go to training and sit on our butts for a couple of hours and then take a mid morning snack -- the pastries left from breakfast, or maybe some fresh cinnamon rolls. Couple more hours on the butt and then comes lunch -- hot or cold, grill, sandwich or steam table, always with dessert (best banana pudding around). Exercise for the afternoon is nodding our head up and down, trying to stay awake in class until the afternoon snack -- cheese, crackers, maybe chips and rotel, maybe soft pretzels, cookies, maybe brownies. Yeah, they usually put out some veggies and dip, too, but really, what's the point?
Full yet? No? Well, sit around a couple more hours then get ready for dinner. But first, stop by the bar where there's beer, wine, mixed drinks, oh, and appetizers in case you're too hungry to wait for dinner, which will be a full course, salad to dessert, or the ice cream bar if you prefer.
Oh, and the "juice bar" is always stocked with all manner of soda (and water), ice cream bars, and various snack mixes like gold fish, malted milk balls, jelly beans, chocolate covered peanuts, and is open day and night.
So let's sum up:
7-8 am -- full breakfast
8-10 am -- sit on butt in training
10-10:15 am -- morning break
10:15 - noon -- sit on butt in training
12-1 pm -- lunch
1 - 3 pm -- sit on butt in training
3 - 3:15 -- afternoon break
3:15 - 5pm -- sit on butt in training
5 - 6:30 pm -- open bar with appetizers
6:30 - 7:30 pm -- dinner
Really bad news, I have to be there for two work weeks starting next Monday. Lord help me! I think I'll write WWMD on my hand so that every time I reach for something to eat, I'll see it.
There is a fitness center in the facility, so I really have no excuses ... and that's my mantra, right? No excuses!
Pray for me...

Oh what a challenge, Cathy! My suggestion is to say NO to anything sweet all week. That will eliminate most of your problems, because once you get started on sweets in an environment like that...well, you know the rest of the story! Pretend you have diabetes or whatever it takes to RESIST THE TEMPTATION. OR, think about walking that last hill in Clinton on Saturday with an extra 5# bag of sugar on your shoulder!
Good luck and keep moving!!
Oh, that is quite a temptation, one that I would struggle with completely. Just think of how bad you'd feel after you ate all that junk. While it would taste good on your lips, it would feel awful in your stomach. Good luck.
P.S. A short time ago that would have been my dream!!!!!
Glad is you and not me. seriously, I could not resist the temptation. can you eat/drink while you are in training? I was thinking you could have some water and then get fruit/veggies, and eat before the breaks, so you won't be tempted by the sweets. just a thought.
dont you need your own personal nurse to go with you and chaperone and taste the foods to make sure they are all ok for you to eat, ha,,
have a good week see ya satQ
how about you stepping outside while everyone else is stepping toward the table. my daughter is a recovering addict, and when she's somewhere that has temptations, she literally removes herself from the situation. i know you can't leave the meetings, but you could walk down the hall, go out on the sidewalk, take a bathroom break, etc. i think the 12 step program probably works for food too! good luck!
I believe in you - you are up for the challenge. You can choose healthy because YOU ARE A MARATHONER!!!
Oh, I know this routine. Don't take the first bite. Don't look at it. Then you don't know what you are missing. I use to be a Weight Watchers instructor. I use to ask people, do you want to be the person hugging the food table or do you want to be the interesting, fun person socializing with everyone? What do you want? To eat all that food or be a marathoner???
I have found when i go to these things, the fitness center (and indoor pool, if they have one) help me from getting sluggish - you know that afternoon slump.
Good luck!!!!
I love, love, love to eat. So I feel your pain. What I TRY to do is get small portions of the "bad" stuff and large portions of the "good stuff" and drink lots & lots of water!
Keep on training! You're strong enough!
Oh my Lord!! I'll just shut up about my donuts........
